FastCab Taxi App Lawsuit: Calgary Cabbies Sue Developer Over Smartphone Cab-Hailing Application

CALGARY - A group of Calgary taxi companies are suing a local software developer over FastCab, a smartphone app allowing passengers to bypass dispatch and hail cabs faster.

The taxi companies allege the app cheats the system and amounts to unfair competition.

Jeff Depker, owner of Fast Cab, says his app puts the client in direct contact with drivers to streamline the process.

Depker says it enables the customer to send out a notice to cab drivers in the area with specific requirements including how many passengers will require transportation and their home destination.

The driver can choose whether to respond to the request.

Drivers and customers have to sign up for the service for it to work properly and to make sure that the drivers are approved by the City of Calgary.

Depker says he`s not surprised that taxi companies oppose the idea.
