RCMP Sgt. James McLaren, who received the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General in 2012, is one of three Alberta Mounties awarded the Commissioner’s Commendation for Bravery in Edmonton on Tuesday.
McLaren was commended for risking his life to help save a suicidal man who had entered Arctic waters in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, in May 2009, during which McLaren also sank through the ice but was able to crawl back to safety.

Const. Deanna Hagen and Const. Jeff Mulroy were commended for helping a 13-year-old girl escape dangerous waters and for risking safety to stop a man intent on ending his own life, respectively.
The commendation recognizes courage in the face of dangerous circumstances beyond those commonly encountered in routine police work.
The awards were presented by RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson and Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan at a private ceremony.
