A sentencing hearing begins Friday for a former student teacher who pleaded guilty to to sexually assaulting a Surrey high school student.
Michael Edward Herrera was charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference in August 2010 after RCMP received a complaint from a 15-year-old-girl.
The girl, who has not been identified, said a student teacher had an "inappropriate relationship" with her.
Herrera was 24 when he was was arrested — not yet an employee of the Surrey school district but a teacher in training.
He had just finished a month-long teaching practicum and was on his way to becoming a certified teacher.
In October last year, on what was to be the first day of a two-week trial, he entered a guilty plea to the charge of sexual assault.
His sentencing hearing begins Friday at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.
