A Saltspring Island, B.C., resident took home one of the most prestigious awards in Hollywood last night.
Jim Erickson, a local set decorator, won the Oscar for best production design for his work on the Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln.
But it's the last film he'll be working on his career. Erickson says he is now retiring, but he can't think of a better way to wrap up 35 years in the business.
“It’s like having a hat trick in the last period in the final game of the Stanley Cup,” he said. “I mean, it's fabulous … it's great!”
This is Erickson's second Oscar nod. In 2008 he was nominated for his work on There Will Be Blood.
His credits also include Seven Years in Tibet, Ali and Water for Elephants.
"I had such a good time on this picture and when it was all over I said, ‘I don' t think I can do any better than this. I think it's time to leave.’”
Erickson wasn't able to make the trek to California for the glitzy Oscar ceremony due to illness, but says he watched the awards at home with family and friends.
