A Canadian man has died in a Cuban resort town, confirmed Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs early Friday.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who passed away in Varadero, Cuba," said a department spokesperson.
The exact cause of death remains unknown, however there are reports that the man drowned. Another man, believed to be from Cuba, drowned trying to rescue the Canadian.
Kirk Nesbitt, engineering vice-president for Rogers, witnessed the incident Thursday afternoon.
"Very shortly after we had arrived there, the fellow in the water started waving his arms and we could hear him yelling," Nesbitt told 680 News. Lifeguards reportedly had to fight high waves to get to the man.
Canadian consular officials are in contact with local authorities and the victim's family, according to Foreign Affairs.
This is not the first time a Canadian in has died in Varadero while on vacation.
In 2006, an Ottawa woman drowned during a catamaran tour in the popular resort destination.
