CARSTAIRS, Alta. - An 83-year-old woman is in critical condition after the SUV being driven by her 81-year-old husband collided with a school bus near Carstairs, Alta.

RCMP say although the bus was partially loaded with students headed home from school on Friday afternoon, there were no injuries reported.

The woman's husband was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash took place on Highway 581.

RCMP say the school bus had activated its amber lights and had started to slow down to let a passenger off when it was rear-ended by the SUV.

RCMP say charges are pending and that alcohol, weather, visibility and road conditions were not factors in the collision.
