When Is Canada's Federal Budget?

Jim Flaherty is playing a little coy about when he will release Canada's 2013 federal budget.

While the long-time federal finance minister has traditionally unveiled his budgets near the end of March — March 29 in 2012 and March 22 the year before — it would appear he isn't ready to set the date just yet.

If Flaherty decides to push the budget to early April, he may steal attention away from the federal Liberal party's leadership race, which ends April 14.

The finance minster, who disclosed that a rare skin condition is behind his recent change in appearance, has dropped a few hints about what the document will contain. In short: modest cuts to spending.

Flaherty told the Economic Club last month that he remains committed to eliminating the deficit before the next federal election in 2015.

"It's been a long road back to balanced budgets," he said. "We're more than half-way there and we'll be even farther there the next fiscal year and I would like to see it through to the finish."

Flaherty has offered a few glimpses of the budget, but no details. It remains to be seen if he can match the splash he made last year by announcing the death of the penny.

While downplaying the need for more stimulus, the longest serving financial chief in the G7 has consistently said the economy is weaker than expected.
