Dustin Ilar, Daniel Mota Arrested: Lookalike Fugitives Caught In BC

Lookalike Fugitives Fumble In B.C.
Victoria Police

Two similar-looking fugitives from California could be on their way back to the United States after police in Esquimalt caught them hiding under each other's names.

Dustin Ilar and Daniel Mota were hiding out on Vancouver Island after warrants had been issued for their arrest in California. Ilar was considered a high risk offender with an extensive robbery and firearms history, Victoria police said in a Thursday news release.

The fugitives planned to fool investigators by use each other's names and give them time to escape. They reportedly hoped that police would question Ilar thinking he was Mota and force them to go "back to the drawing board," police said.

Victoria police caught on to the plan and arrested the fugitives at separate apartments. Both have been handed over to the Canadian Border Services Agency and are "likely" on their way back to California. Mota is wanted for parole revocation, police said.

"Victoria and Esquimalt are not hiding places for fugitives, no matter where they’re from," Victoria police Insp. Brian Fox said in the news release.
