'Real Hipsters Of Vancouver' Holds Auditions

Looking For Real Hipsters Of Vancouver
Guilty Pleasure

Vancouver already has its "Real Housewives," so why not the "Real Hipsters," a premise that might actually bear some similarity to the people who live in the city.

Britt Irvin and Jesse Haddock, creators of a proposed reality TV show called "The Real Hipsters of Vancouver," posted a casting call for a few people on Craigslist and soon got more responses than they could keep up with.

And what might the show's characters look like? Plaid-shirted bohemians with thick glasses? Watching them argue why Fellini is better than Antonioni, while a Bon Iver-like solo artist plays open mic night at a Main Street cafe?

Producers are looking for six or seven hip, fun, attractive people under 40 who believe that "living their life is an art in itself," who romanticize their youth and who live in constant performance mode, the creators said.

"(We) see everything (our) acquaintances eat and every time they kiss their boyfriend on Instagram, so it seems... that these people have no worries about putting their lives out there for everyone to see," Irvin and Haddock told The Huffington Post B.C. this week via email.

The show's premise has its roots in Vancouver's status as the most expensive city in North America, say the creators. They want to show how the city's artistic community is "adapting, improvising and overcoming this hostile environment."

Many believe the city's arts community is eroding after the closing of venues such as the Waldorf Hotel and the Vancouver Playhouse Company last year.

The show hasn't been picked up by a network yet but Irvin and Haddock are meeting with more experienced producers and looking at casting some of the city's more "influential" hipsters.

The idea of a hipster doing something as mainstream as a reality show may seem contradictory, but the producers have already gotten several audition tapes, including from a few "Twitter haters."

Then again, actually doing the show might be more hipster than not doing it.
