Chris Hadfield Talks To Alberta High School Students From Space (VIDEO)

WATCH: Chris Hadfield Talks To Students

Students at an Alberta school got the rare chance on Monday to speak with astronaut Chris Hadfield about science, space and living without gravity.

Hadfield, who is aboard the International Space Station and has thousands following his journey through social media, spoke directly via a live link from space to nearly 1,000 grade 9 to 12 students from Bert Church High School in Airdrie.

"Greetings and welcome aboard the International Space Station," said Hadfield as the Canadian Space Agency performed a sound check.

Students, who burst into a thunderous cheer upon first hearing Hadfield on the other end of the transmission, inquired about how food tasted in orbit, how Hadfield adjusted to living without gravity and what it was like operating the Canadaarm2.

The school's Grade 9 science classes are part of a Let's Talk Science national action project, which was developed to engage Canadian classrooms in an experiment similar to one Hadfield is working on while posted at the ISS.

The astronaut and the students are comparing notes from their experiments through the Let's Talk Science's website.

Former Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Robert Thirsk was at the Airdrie school during the call and said, "the Space program is a good way to grab young people's attention. And then once you have their attention, you can teach them a lot of math and science and technology."

Hadfield also spoke to students at a Martensville, Saskatchewan school on Monday, speaking for the last time before he becomes the first Canadian Commander of the ISS on Wednesday.
