The Royals (33-30-7) opened the scoring late in the first period as Taylor Crunk banked in his third goal of the season from the goal line, giving the Royals a 1-0 advantage heading to the second period.
The Winterhawks (54-12-3) were able to pull even 1-1 early in the second with a power-play goal from Ty Rattie — his 40 of the season.
The Winterhawks kept coming in the second, scoring three unanswered goals. Dominic Turgeon scored the eventual winner and Brendan Leipsic wired his 45 of the season to make it 3-1 Winterhawks.
Taylor Peters scored shorthanded late in the frame to give Portland a 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes of play.
In the third period Royals’ forward Logan Nelson hit the cross bar on a breakaway, but on the play, Winterhawks goalie Mac Carruth over extended trying to make the save and was forced to leave the game. Carruth finished with 20 saves.
Royals’ goaltender, Coleman Vollrath, made 40 saves.
