Italy's Matteo Tagliariol wins Vancouver Grand Prix fencing event

VANCOUVER - Italy's Matteo Tagliariol defeated Estonia's Nikolai Novosjolov to win the Vancouver Grand Prix senior men's epee fencing title Sunday.

Tagliarol, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, entered the tournament as the 28th seed before beating No. 3 Novosjolov.

Germany's Joerg Fiedler finished tied for third with Hungary's Gabor Boczko after losing to Tagliariol in the semifinals.

Fiedler was coming off a victory over reigning Olympic gold medallist and top-seeded Ruben Limardo Gascon of Venezuela, who finished sixth.

Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger was the top Canadian at the event. The Montreal native finished 28th.
