The family of Polina Kazanceva, a woman found dead in the street of a Calgary neighbourhood last week, are remembering her as a thoughtful and charismatic person who always stood up for herself.

Kazanceva's body was found in the middle of the city's Sunalta neighbourhood by a taxi driver last Wednesday morning. An autopsy determined she died of blunt force trauma.

The 19-year-old was visiting Calgary and had been in the city for a week before her death. The Calgary Herald reports she had posted several ads to an online escort listing site indicating she had been in Calgary and Red Deer in recent weeks.

Her family issued the following statement on Sunday:

"Our pain is inexplicable. This tragedy will forever remain in our hearts, an occurrence that is hard to overcome. There is nothing worse than having to bury your own child. We do not wish this upon anyone.

Polina has always been and will remain to be; without a doubt highly generous and phenomenally thoughtful.

She was a kind soul, willing to take on initiative- never ignoring a person in need. She was always ready to assist, help and provide any support necessary in any situation where she was needed.

She was very joyful and outgoing around her loved ones, she was a beam of light in any group.

She was bright and always attentive towards others around her. Unfortunately she had chosen to live fast and thus selected a path.

However, she has never hurt the weak, alternatively she was always ready to stand up for herself.

Polina had charisma, for which she was respected by some and misunderstood or even envied, by others. For this, she stood out in any crowd.

Her generosity (in the literal sense of the word) astounded many people around her.

She knew how to express joy and had a deep appreciation for life, showing others how to do the same. She loved and was loved.

This is how Polina will remain in our hearts." - Via calgary.ca)

According to the Calgary Sun, police have ruled out her death as being connected to a nearby crash Wednesday morning involving a Cadillac at 12 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.

The Herald reports driver of the vehicle was found a short time later. The car was heavily damaged after it crashed into a concrete post and the airbags deployed, smashing out the windshield.

Police told the Herald they are conducting door-to-door interviews in a search for witnesses and reviewing surveillance video.

"We're keeping an open mind and looking at all possibilities," Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus told CBC Calgary.
