New Brunswick Travel: Fredericton's Streets Hold Surprises For Visitors

What Is There To Do In Downtown Fredericton?
CP

Downtown Fredericton holds unique surprises for those who wander its streets – including scenic views of the Saint John River that winds through the provincial capital.

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery has a small, but mighty, collection of works that runs the gamut from First Nations sculpture to British masters like Constable and Turner.

The portrait gallery at the entrance demands prolonged viewing, thanks to the museum’s crown jewel, Salvador Dali’s Santiago el Grande (an homage to the apostle St. James) and images of well-known figures like Winston Churchill.

In the mood to acquire art? Check out Gallery 78 across the street for works by artists from Atlantic Canada.

Get a fun dose of Canadian history at the Historic Garrison District. Behind the wrought iron and stone fence, British troops lived from 1784-1869.

Now, it’s a busy hub for outdoor concerts, movies, festivals (like August’s Acadian Day) and military reenactments. Shoppers feel the pull of the Soldier’s Barracks, now home to boutiques run by local artisans selling handcrafted wares.

Whatever you choose to do, fuel up first on delicious goodies from the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market. The must nibbles include: a lobster roll (made to order), homemade ginger and peach jam and meat- and veggie-stuffed samosas.
