Alex Ovechkin was the unsurprising choice as NHL's first star of the week after lighting the lamp frequently last week.
Ovechkin led all NHL skaters for the week ending April 7 with seven goals, to go along with two assists. The sniper scored a hat trick against Florida, and two each in games against Carolina and Tampa Bay. In a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders, he found the mark in the shootout.
Ovechkin has 16 goals in his last 14 games as the Capitals have climbed the standings all the way to first in the mediocre Southeast Division.
Brian Elliott was named the second star. One of the streakiest players in the league, the St. Louis Blues goalie allowed just four goals in recording three victories. Elliott posted a 1.45 goals-against and .945 save percentage.
Elliott and the Blues leapfrogged Detroit for seventh in the West standings with a 1-0 shutout win over the Wings on Sunday afternoon.
New York Rangers star goalie Henrik Lundqvist was the third star. The Swede went 3-0-1 with a glistening .962 save percentage and 1.22 average.
