EDMONTON - A trial is underway for a teen accused of killing two people on an rural property east of Edmonton after he ran away from a group home.
RCMP originally charged two boys with first-degree murder in the 2009 deaths of Barry Boenke, who was 68, and his friend Susan Trudel, who was 50.
The youth was on the run from Bosco Homes youth treatment facility, about 10 kilometres from Boenke's property near Ardrossan, the Edmonton Journal reports.
After a judge tossed out crucial evidence against the pair during pretrial hearings, the Crown stayed the charges but later reactivated the case against the one teen.
The teen, who was 14 at the time of the killings, is being tried as a youth and cannot be identified.
He faces two counts of second-degree murder, break and enter and possession of stolen property.
The trial is scheduled to last six weeks.
