Lotto 6/49 Hikes Price To $3, Adds New Prizes

Ontario's lottery agency is adding new ways to win and increasing the price of its signature Lotto 6/49 ticket in the process.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (known by its acronym OLG) said in a release Wednesday that starting in September, a Lotto 6/49 ticket will include a new $1 million prize that is guaranteed to be won every week.

The regular starting jackpot will be increased to $5 million, and players can win free play prizes by matching two numbers.

"Lotto 6/49 will be creating more millionaires every week," OLG senior vice-president Greg McKenzie said in a release.

Currently, a Lotto 6/49 ticket costs $2. Starting September, that will increase to $3.

"We tested these improvement with more than 10,000 ... players from coast to coast," McKenzie said. "They were excited about the new ways to win and they told us that it's great value for the new price."

With the new free play options, the OLG says the odds of winning some sort of prize in the game have improved from one in 32.3 to one in 6.6 "which means nearly five times more winning overall," the agency said.
