LHFDQ Nord and North Bay Ice Boltz to meet in Saturday's Esso Cup final

BURNABY, B.C. - LHFDQ Nord scored five straight goals before withstanding a late barrage to defeat the Regina Rebels 6-3 on Friday in semifinal action at the Esso Cup.

With the victory, the Quebec representatives moved into Saturday's final of Canada's national women's midget hockey championship.

LHFDQ Nord will meet the North Bay Ice Boltz in the championship game after the Ontario club upset the Pacific region's Edmonton Thunder 5-1 in the other semifinal.

Six different skaters scored for LHFDQ Nord against Regina, including three in the second period. The last came on a short-handed effort from Vyckie Gelinas and stood up as the game winner against the West region representatives.

Trailing 5-0 in the third period, Regina scored two goals 1:12 apart midway through the third period before adding a third in the final minutes.

But the comeback bid was put to rest when LHFDQ Nord scored to make it 6-3 with 90 seconds to play.

Meanwhile, Chloe Dion had a goal and two assists to lead North Bay to its first Esso Cup final after the victory over previously undefeated Edmonton.
