In a sign of the growing influence of social media, the head of CBC’s English language services has left to become managing director of Twitter’s Canadian operations.

I’ve had some of the happiest moments in my life at the CBC, and I’ve been honoured to represent such an important name to Canadians,” Stewart said in a statement. “I’m proud of what we’ve done together these past seven years.”

A memo to CBC staff, posted on Globe and Mail media reporter Steve Ladurantaye’s blog, explains Stewart is leaving the CBC immediately, and a recruitment process to replace her will begin shortly.

Neil McEnearney, the CBC’s general manager for finance and strategy, will step into the role in the interim.

Marc Weisblott at Canada.com notes that Stewart’s Twitter handle has already changed, from @KStewartCBC to @kirstinestewart.
