The Alberta government says there is no connection between a strike by prison guards and the weekend beating of an inmate at Calgary's remand centre.
The prisoner was taken to hospital in critical condition following Sunday's assault, although he is expected to recover.
Police say they will look into whether there was a connection between the assault and the illegal strike by jail guards.
They hope security camera video will give them a better idea of who was involved in the beating and the motive.
Kevin Brookwell, a Calgary police spokesman, says investigators want to know where inmates were and what they were doing at the time of the assault.
A Court of Queen's Bench justice ruled Monday night that the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees is in contempt of court for defying an earlier Alberta Labour Board ruling ordering its members back to work.
