Gatineau Street Racing: 200 Km/H Chase Nabs Two Men

200 Km/H Police Chase Nabs Street Racers

Two men escaped criminal charges after being caught racing at speeds of more than 200 km/h in Gatineau Monday night, according to the Ottawa Citizen

Const. Martin Fournel said the two offenders, 19 and 20, whose names have not been released, will each instead face fines for speeding and street racing under the Highway Safety Code. The penalty for speeding amounts to $1,100 and 18 demerit points and $1,000 and 12 demerit points for street racing.

Officers of MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais first spotted two Honda Civics driving side by side on Highway 50, which is usually patrolled by Sûreté du Québec, close to the Labrosse exit at around 11 p.m.

When one of the drivers, unaware of being watched, honked his horn several times to indicate the race was about to start, the officers began their pursuit, according to 580 CFRA Ottawa.

The race lasted for about a kilometre, and reached speeds in excess of 200 km/h.

“They saw them going faster and faster so they were able to monitor the speed, with the speed of the cruiser,” Fournel told the Citizen. “They had a hard time keeping up.”

The two men, one from Cantley and the other from Ottawa, have had their licenses suspended and their vehicles impounded for a mandatory period of seven days.
