If you’re befuddled by the choice in the skin cream aisle it might be time to remember the KISS axiom and “keep it simple.” These four oils are among nature’s superstars and can do more than just moisturize.

1. Grape Seed Oil

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you might be worried about using an oil, but grape seed oil is also mildly astringent, which helps to tighten and tone skin while still moisturizing. Rich in linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid needed for skin and cell membranes) as well as Vitamin E and minerals, grape seed oil is also a great anti-aging oil, especially for skin types that can’t tolerate richer, heavier creams.

2. Macadamia Nut Oil

Native to Australia, it’s the only plant oil that contains large amounts of palmitoleic acid, a substance found in sebum, a substance secreted by the sebaceous glands. As we age, sebum production slows, so this can be a great, light oil for aging skin.

3. Sea Buckthorn Oil

Widely known in Europe and Asia, the berry of the Sea Buckthorn plant has been hailed as a weight loss miracle aid. The cold-pressed oil is the richest plant-based source of Vitamin A and E and is also high in Vitamins B1, B, K, and P and dozens of other micronutrients. Its powerful regenerative properties make it ideal for use on reducing scarring, such as from acne, or to treat eczema.

4. Lemon Oil

Lemon oil is a great cleanser that can brighten dull complexions by removing dead skin cells. It’s important to remember, though, that like AHA creams, it is photosensitizing, so avoid applying to skin within 12 hours of exposing to sunlight or UV rays.
