State of emergency declared in tiny eastern Newfoundland community

RIVERHEAD, N.L. - A state of emergency has been declared in a small eastern Newfoundland community.

The mayor of Riverhead says the town has been without water since Wednesday and a conservation order is in effect.

Colin Corcoran says provincial engineers are trying to determine the issue with the town's water supply system.

He says problems with the system have been ongoing for a number of years.

About 200 people live in the town, located about 100 kilometres southwest of St. John's.
