A five-foot ball python was pulled from a dumpster along one of Winnipeg's upscale streets on Tuesday night.
A person walking past the dumpster heard noise and looked inside to see the large snake moving in the garbage located behind a riverside condo on the 200 block of Wellington Crescent.
The passerby called police right away. Police, in turn, called the city's animal services department.
Leland Gordon, animal services chief operating officer, said he believed the snake was deliberately discarded.
Gordon said the snake will now be held until the city can find a home for it.
He added cases like this are extremely rare, and Winnipeg's animal services agency only gets about 10 calls per year about snakes.
