Elevator repair strike prompts police warning

Toronto Police are advising residents to be on the lookout for potential damage to elevators as an ongoing elevator repair workers strike continues.

Police say they received a report of tampering in an elevator at an apartment building in the Finch and Kipling Avenue area.

A repair service had been called but the man who answered the call had not been assigned to it. Police do not know how the man received information about the service call. He arrived at the building and claimed to be a maintenance worker.

Police say he was given access to the elevator room and altered the operating functions of two elevators in the building.

A 57-year-old man is now charged with mischief. Police say people should remain on alert for anyone trying to force the buttons on elevator operating panels, or riding the elevators with tools such as wire cutters.
