Quick, what’s the word to describe that feeling when food, however unappealing, is all you crave at the end of the day?
Time is up. The answer (if you're from Newfoundland and Labrador) is "gut-foundered."
It’s exact definition — being “very hungry” or “famished,” according to the Dictionary of Newfoundland English — and others are described in a series of YouTube videos posted by Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism. The series draws attention to the hundreds of dialects spoken across the province.
“Your mind wanders when it’s gut-foundered. Is it going to be take-out? Is it going to be pizza?” a scruffy Newfoundlander asks in the video. “You are finished. You are starved to death and you can’t wait to get something to eat. Everything is delicious when you’re gut-foundered.”
He also says "car" at 0:21 in a way that cannot be described in words, but which is definitely funny. Also something about a "Belgian delicatessen" — funny as well.
The video, which has racked up more than 22,000 views since it was posted on April 29, is part of the "Find Yourself" campaign that has won more than 170 national and international awards since being launched in 2006
A spokesperson for Newfoundland’s Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation told The Huffington Post Canada that it's possible to go from one dialect to another simply by driving "20 or 30 minutes up the road."
