The Green Party has finally broken through at the provincial level and will form a presence in British Columbia's new government.
Andrew Weaver won the riding of Oak Bay - Gordon Head with 3,489 votes. It marks the first time that a member of the Green Party has been elected to B.C.'s legislature.
"We didn't split the vote, we are the vote in Oak Bay-Gordon Head," Andrew Weaver told his supporters tonight.
The University of Victoria professor said that campaigning had been a radical departure from his lab bench - and that he was so uncomfortable at the beginning of his campaign, he needed help knocking on doors.
"Tonight," he said. "We've made history. You've made history. We all made history together."
The Liberal incumbent Ida Chong was pushed into third place.
The MLA's victory follows that of federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, who won Saanich-Gulf Islands from former cabinet minister Gary Lunn in the 2011 federal election.
