An Edmonton man is behind bars after a random stabbing spree over the long weekend.
Brandon Meeches, 19, has been charged after four people were stabbed near the Kingsway Garden Mall Saturday evening, reports CTV Edmonton.
Police told CTV Meeches allegedly tried to rob three people in a McDonald's parking lot close to the mall, shortly after 6 p.m.
"When he was unsuccessful he attempted to stab the first pair of males," Staff Sgt. Malcolm Allan said.
One man was stabbed in the back and another man's shirt was slashed.
The attacker then road a bike across the street to a transit terminal where he slashed a 34-year-old man and stabbed a 50-year old woman, reports the Edmonton Journal.
"These were just random people waiting for the bus," Allan told the Journal.
"He knew none of these people. These were just innocent bystanding victims who were going about their day."
Bystander Brendan MacKay told CBC Edmonton he was on a bus that stopped at the transit station when he saw a man with a bleeding arm wound. The man and a woman got on the bus, while a man with a knife continued to take swings at them.
"Bus driver got in between them. He was on the phone with 911 already, told them to screw off and this guy just gets on his bike and starts pedalling away really fast," he said.
MacKay said he then noticed the woman was bleeding from her back and wheezing.
She was taken to hospital with a life-threatening stab wound to her back, but is expected to recover, Global Edmonton reports.
Meeches has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery and numerous violence and weapons offences.
