One man is dead after a float plane crashed near Stuart Island on Tuesday, confirm the Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Victoria, B.C.

Emergency dispatchers received a call from a “concerned citizen” who spotted an overturned float plane shortly after 5:20 p.m., according to Lt.-Cmdr. Desmond James, public affairs officer for Maritime Forces Pacific.

“We then dispatched a helicopter from Comox and two Coast Guard vessels to the scene,” said James to HuffPost B.C.

When search and rescue workers arrived, they found a beaver float plane overturned near the entrance of Bute Inlet. One man was found in the wreckage with no vital signs.

It remains early in the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Police have not released information about the victim.
