A jeep being driven by an 11-year-old girl crashed, killing a 12-year-old female passenger in B.C., RCMP say.

The accident happened May 17 on the Causeway Forest Service Road, six kilometers from Mackenzie.

RCMP say that the 1994 Jeep YJ overturned when the young driver lost control of the SUV. A 41-year-old man was supervising the under-age driver at the time of the crash. All occupants were from the Mackenzie area. No names have been released at this time.

"The impact on the community and in our elementary and high schools has been significant," stated Sergeant Syd Lecky, Mackenzie RCMP detachment commander in a press release. "Investigators and RCMP Victim Assistance workers continue to work with the community in providing support to the affected families."

The Causeway Road was closed for approximately 10 hours. The incident is being investigated by Mackenzie RCMP and the BC Coroners Service.
