The Quotable Stephen Mandel
EDMONTON, CANADA - FEBRUARY 26: Former Edmonton Oilers Mark Messier #11 laughs as City of Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel hams it up at the unveiling of Mark Messier trail during a Civic Ceremony honoring him at Sir Winston Churchill Square on Monday, February 26, 2007 in Edmonton. Despite the bitter cold hundreds of Oilers fans came out to pay tribute to Messier, who will have his #11 retired tomorrow night at Rexall Place prior to the Oilers match against the Phoenix Coyotes. Like his counterpart three hours south, Stephen Mandel has battled the province and political opponents with an often combative, always passionate defense of his city.

Mandel never apologized for his tone, or his fierce defense of the policies he believed helped the City of Edmonton improve their reputation.

Among many other accomplishments, Mandel secured Edmonton's downtown arena and steered a massive renovation of the River Valley.

Since first becoming mayor in 2004, Mandel's accomplishments have at times been over shadowed by his blunt reactions to comments by political opponents.

He has also had run-ins with mayors, MLA's andeven other cities.

But through it all, Mandel could always be counted on for a good quote.
