Michael Frolik silenced the crowd at Joe Louis Arena with a historic penalty shot to help the Chicago Blackhawks survive yet another elimination game against the Detroit Red Wings. This and more in the top NHL playoff stories from Monday:
1. A three-goal burst in the third period kept the Chicago Blackhawks alive against the Detroit Red Wings in Game 6. Michael Frolik's penalty shot held up as the game-winner, and not only did the Czech wingerfreeze Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard with the effortless backhander, butFrolik made history as the first player to score two career penalty shots in the playoffs. At the other end of the ice, Chicago netminder Corey Crawford made 35 saves, a performance which Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry says deserves more recognition. The Blackhawks take the Red Wings back to Chicago for Game 7 on Wednesday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET).
2. San Jose Sharks centre Logan Couture did his best Bob Cole impression to set up the series finale against the Los Angeles Kings. But with home victories deciding the first six games in the all-California matchup, Kings centre Mike Richards is taking it easy in L.A.The defending Stanley Cup champs host the Sharks in Game 7 on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET). If the Sharks make it out alive, Cherry said on Coach's Corner that San Jose will owe its success to Jumbo Joe.
3. As the Bruins and Penguins prepare for their clash in the East final, Boston looked back at its winless regular season record against Pittsburgh. But that doesn't mean the B's are dwelling on the past. "The regular season is one thing, playoffs is another," said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "So we're certainly not hanging our hats on the fact that our record wasn't good against them this year." Meanwhile, it looks like the only issue the Penguins have to deal with is an abundance of depth.
4. Despite a second-round elimination by the Pens last week, CBCSports.ca's Tim Wharnsby writes that fans and the media have plenty to thank the Ottawa Senators for, and a lot to look forward to in the club's promising future.
