3-year-old dies after Saltspring Island crash

A three-year-old girl injured in a car crash on Saltspring Island on Tuesday died of her injuries last night at B.C. Children's Hospital.

The child's identity has not been released. The child's mother and five-year-old sister remain in a Victoria hospital with serious injuries, said police.

RCMP Staff Sgt. George Jenkins says police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, which happened around 2:30 p.m. PT when the family's 2006 Volkswagen Jetta struck a 2000 GMC Savana van on Fulford-Ganges Road.

Police say the cause of the crash is not yet known, but they believe the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when somehow the rear end of the Jetta hit the front end of the GMC van.

The driver of the van was not injured in the crash.
