Elderly canoeist presumed drowned Squamish

An elderly canoeist missing in the Mamquam Blind Channel in Squamish is presumed drowned.

The local RCMP has taken over the case, and rescue crews have called off their search.

Capt. Eric Niemi with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says the search was launched Monday afternoon when witnesses said they saw an elderly man in a red canoe.

“They saw him apparently okay, but they turned around a few minutes later and the canoe hadn't really moved but it was upside down and he was nowhere to be seen — no splashing around, no nothing, just upside down canoe and he was gone.”
