A Dartmouth, Nova Scotia mother said her daughter isn't her "same little girl anymore" after a video showing her and several boys in a sex act at a party spread through social media.
In a story that sounds eerily like that of Rehtaeh Parsons, the 17-year-old who died after she attempted suicide in April, the woman said her daughter has been bullied in school and on Facebook.
“She’s being bullied, being called names by the girls and boys offering bus tickets for blow jobs,” the mother told Metro Halifax. “All the kids call her ‘Facebook Famous.’”
The mother said the girl, who used to do well in school and volunteer in the community, has dropped out of school and is shoplifting.
A 14-year-old Halifax boy was arrested by Halifax Police last week and charged with making and distributing child pornography. The charge involves a video that depicts a sex act from a party and distributed through social media. Police said the charge is related to a consensual sex act filmed at a party without consent of the girl involved.
The girl's mother says her daughter told her it was an "all-you-can-drink" event and that she was dragged into a room to perform oral sex on one of the boys. She said when she picked her daughter up from the party, she was so drunk she couldn't stand, and that "she could barely walk, let alone say yes to anything."
However, police said the act was "consensual" after interviewing all the people involved.
Rehtaeh Parsons' father, Glen Canning, told Metro Halifax he "couldn't believe" the story when he read it in the newspaper.
“I can imagine this girl is going through the same thing as [Rehtaeh], and what are we going to do, sit here and watch this again?”
Canning told the CBC in May that he was frustrated police haven't yet laid any charges in the death of his daughter, who attempted suicide and later died in hospital after she was allegedly raped at a party and bullied online.
He said he hopes the justice system responds quicker in this case than they did with Rehtaeh. He would love to see those bullying the girl charged with criminal harassment.
“They gotta know that doing that to someone is just going to devastate them, and what are they doing it for? A thrill? A kick?” he said.
