Summer just isn't summer in Vancouver without the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), the annual showcase of family fun that will run this year from August 20 to September 2.
The fair's history reaches back to 1910, when Canadian Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier opened what was then known as the "Industrial Exhibition." It was seen as a way to showcase British Columbia to the rest of Canada and the world, says the PNE's website.
Since then it has evolved into the biggest ticketed event in the province, with an estimated 900,000 people attending over the course of its opening.
Change is in the air for the fair this year, as prices for general admission and parking fall from $20 to $16 in response to declining attendance in 2012. Fair days will also be reduced from 17 to 15, with operations closed on the first two Mondays.
For those who can't wait to get their fix of the fair, Playland is open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and starting June 14 it will be open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
