Prince George gets inner-city youth orchestra program

The Prince George symphony is launching a program for inner-city school children, which seeks to bring about social change through classical music.

The Prince George Symphony Orchestra has announced a pilot project based on El Sistema — a world-renowned Venezuelan youth orchestra program that provides intensive classical music training to underprivileged kids.

In September, up to 16 children at Quinson Elementary school will take part in the program.

PGSO Concertmaster Jose Delgado-Guevara says they want to provide a positive alternative to joining gangs, and other risky behaviour.

"When you give children the tools to unleash their creativity, what happens is just incredible," said Delgado-Guevara.

Delgado-Guevara says the students will start with violin lessons.

"I can't wait to see the faces of these children when you give them a violin and they start playing," he added.
