1 dead after crash in Victoria

One person is dead after a crash in Victoria early Saturday morning.

Police say a speeding car hit a lamp post at the intersection of Blanshard Street and Cloverdale Avenue just after 3 a.m. PT. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is now looking into the crash, after a report that the driver was trying to evade a police car.

Meanwhile, the IIO is also investigating after a boy was hit by a police car on the Lougheed Highway at 216th Street early Saturday.

Police say Ridge Meadows RCMP officers were travelling in two separate vehicles on the Lougheed Highway just after midnight. The first car passed the boy, who was walking along the highway, but the second police car hit him.

He was taken to hospial with serious injuries.
