Michael Applebaum Arrested: Twitter Reacts To Montreal Mayor's Arrest

Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum,(L) arrives at the provincial police headquarters shortly after his arrest on June 17, 2013. Applebaum was arrested Monday and will be questioned by the Canadian province's anti-corruption unit later in the day, said a source close to the investigation. His arrest comes amid a probe into several corruption scandals that have shaken Quebec's largest city for more than a year and that led the former mayor to resign in November. Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum and two others were arrested by Quebec's anti-corruption task force on Monday.

The arrest leaves Montreal's City Hall in disarray and raises more questions about corruption in that province.

On Twitter, many Torontonians tried to draw comparisons between Applebaum and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who is facing his own scandal.

Applebaum is just the latest Quebec mayor to be arrested by the anti-corruption unit.

Gilles Vaillancourt, the former longtime mayor of Laval, was arrested in a sweep last month and charged with fraud and gangsterism.

Applebaum was elected by Montreal's city council to serve as mayor after Gerald Tremblay stepped down last fall amid corruption allegations.
