The actor who played Tony Soprano, James Gandolfini, has died in Italy at age 51.

HBO and Gandolfini's managers confirmed his death Wednesday night, saying it was believed the actor died of a heart attack.

"Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving", his managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders told Deadline.com.

Gandolfini's star role as New Jersey mob boss on HBO's hit drama 'The Sopranos' earned him three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and made Tony Soprano an iconic character in TV canon.

The show, which spanned six seasons, followed Soprano's struggles to deal with his family and work life while talking it out with his therapist.
