One man is dead after being shot near Abbotsford's West Oaks Shopping Centre Sunday evening.

UPDATE: June 24 - The victim has been identified as Harpreet Chahal, 25, of Abbotsford by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Chahal was known to police.

Gunfire erupted near South Fraser Way and Emerson Street around 5:15 p.m., according to an Abbotsford police news release. Witnesses say they saw shots fired from a car into a "dark coloured sedan."

A South Asian man in his 20s was found with apparent gunshot wounds when police, paramedics arrived on scene. He was transported to hospital and died of his injuries.

It remains early to determine a motive for the fatal shooting.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the case.
