Calgary's emergency management head says the city's downtown core could be without power for weeks, or even months, the Globe and Mail reports.
Bruce Burrell, chief of Calgary's Emergency Management Agency, said the vast majority of the downtown core is powerless, but that business owners will be allowed to check on their properties on Sunday, according to the Calgary Sun.
"There's a big chunk of the downtown core still without power," he said.
"It may be without power for days, it may be without power for weeks."
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said the city knows the downtown power outage won't be repaired soon, the Calgary Herald reports.
“We know that this outage will be long lasting,” he said.
“It is extremely unlikely that people will be able to return to those buildings before the middle of next week.”
Edmonton fire crews are sending 100 people and pieces of equipment to help pump water out of buildings damaged by flooding, the Calgary Sun reports.
"We want to recover as quickly as possible," Burrell said.
Power has been restored in some parts of the city, according to energy supplier ENMAX, but the downtown core and several areas near it remain without power.
