Calgary man sentenced to 8 years for stabbing at celebration in Coalhurst

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - A Calgary man has been sentenced to 8 1/2 years after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Harpal Singh Dhillon repeatedly stabbed Jiwanjyot Ghai with a box cutter outside the community centre in Coalhurst in November 2010.

Dhillon stabbed Ghai several times that night and also attacked two men who tried to break up the fight.

During the trial, court heard Dhillon got into a confrontation with Ghai's younger brother during a Diwali celebration, and that's when Ghai got involved.

Dhillon's lawyer, Jim Lutz says he wanted a lighter sentence, saying his client is young and was put in a difficult situation and in the end, both families have lost.

Dhillon was given credit for 49 days served in custody.
