Customs authorities at Abu Dhabi's airport busted a man trying to smuggle 129 diamonds, worth $65,000, into the country by placing them in a small bag in one of his socks, Arabian Business reports.
Officials in the United Arab Emirates' capital said the 25-year-old man didn't declare the stones in order to avoid paying fees. They added that he acted suspiciously in the airport.
“The culprit did not disclose the presence of the diamonds in order to avoid paying customs fees,” stated a press release from Abu Dhabi's customs directorate, according to The National.
“A file was subsequently opened regarding this case and the authorities were informed to take the necessary legal action.”
That same night, in the same airport, authorities arrested a man attempting to smuggle 4,100 narcotic drugs wrapped in carbon paper and inside medicine boxes, according to Emirates 24/7.
