Father drowns in British Columbia lake while trying to rescue his own sons

VERNON, B.C. - The RCMP say a man who drowned in a B.C. lake over the long weekend was a father from the Yukon who was attempting to save his children.

Police say three boys, aged 9 through 11, were caught in strong currents in Wood Lake near the Kokanee Beach Resort, south of Vernon, on Saturday afternoon.

Several family members and a nearby paddle boat rescued the boys, but during those efforts, the father of two of the boys disappeared beneath the water.

The man's body was recovered later in the day by a local search-and-rescue team.

The victim's name has not been released, but police say he was a 42-year-old man from Whitehorse.
