Heartbreaking, senseless and disgusting is how Edmontonians described news that a child that was left unattended in a car during record heat on Tuesday had died.

Allison Currie on Twitter called the event, "Heartbreaking and infuriating," while many others questioned if people will ever understand the dangers of leaving children inside cars in sweltering heat.

Carole Anne Devaney called the tragedy, "Absolutely heartbreaking and preventable."

The three-year-old child was found near death Tuesday evening outside an Edmonton townhouse complex.

It's not known who rescued her or how long she had been in the vehicle.

Paramedics performed CPR and provided hydration before the youngster was taken by ambulance to the Stollery Children's Hospital.

The temperature in Edmonton hit 33 C on Tuesday and felt like 43 C with humidity levels.

Others called for those responsible to be punished in a similar manner.
