Dashcam records lane change gone wrong on Highway 1

A dashboard camera recorded an accident involving a cube van and a pass on Highway 1 that left another car in a Langley, B.C. ditch.

The video, which was posted to YouTube, shows a car passing the cube van on the right, and the cube van attempting to change lanes into the same space.

The driver of the car swerves to avoid the van, and ends up losing control and flipping over off on the right shoulder of the highway, just west of 232 Street.

The dashcam's time and date stamp are off — the accident happened at around 2:15 p.m. on Monday, according to the YouTube post — but if the speed indicator is accurate, traffic at the time was moving at around 100 km/h.

Langley RCMP Cpl. Robert McDonald says the incident, and the video of it, is a good reminder to drivers to maintain distance from others, especially at highway speeds.

"Slow down, keep a good distance between yourself and the other vehicle, especially if you're going to change lanes," he said. "If you change from behind the vehicle, leave some distance so you can be seen."

The driver of the cube van, a man from Abbotsford, was issued a $109 fine for making an unsafe lane change.
