BELLA BELLA, B.C. - A devastating fire has destroyed the only grocery store in the remote coastal First Nations community of Bella Bella, B.C.
RCMP say the band store was among four businesses including a liquor store, post office and cafe in the 35-year-old wood structure that burned down.
Const. Lesley Smith says the entire community will be affected by the blaze that was reported at 4 a.m. Friday.
She says police evacuated the local hospital and several homes as flames spread quickly near several gas and diesel tanks at the local gas station.
An emergency program within the Health Ministry is expected to help the community.
A forensic identification team and the fire commissioner are expected to arrive in Bella Bella on Saturday.
