Regina hospital to close OR for 6 days to replace sewer pipes after leaks

REGINA - A hospital in Regina is closing its operating room for six days to replace sewer pipes.

The operating rooms at the Pasqua Hospital will close Saturday until July 25.

A hospital official says there have been problems with water and sewer leaks in that area of the hospital.

Val Hunko, interim vice president of specialty care, says the summer is the best time to do this because only half of the hospital's eight surgical suites are in use.

He say the effect on wait lists should minimal.

There were sewer leaks in the area in December 2012 and March 2013, and a water leak in early June, setting off a review of the physical plant.

Hunko says even though there were no threats to patient or staff safety in these situations, the hospital has to take action to ensure it does not happen again.

Surgical rooms at the Regina General will not be affected, and it will open an extra emergency surgical suite to handle overflow in emergency services.
