Compass Card Testing: TransLink Needs Recruits (VIDEO)

TransLink's Compass Card Needs Testers

TransLink is currently seeking recruits to test a reloadable fare card in preparation for its roll out across Metro Vancouver later this year.

The public transit body is looking for 5,000 people to take part in the "Compass Beta Test" on the new Compass Card.

There is no official launch date yet, but TransLink spokesman Derek Zabel told The Huffington Post B.C. that the test is meant to "iron out some of the kinks" in the system. Testers will still have to pay to use the public transit system as normal.

The card allows you to tap in and out of the transit system at points on buses, SeaBuses and SkyTrain stations. When you tap the card, the system automatically tells you whether you have enough money for the trip. You then have to tap out so that the system knows it has charged you the right amount.

Similar systems already run in New York,London and San Francisco.

Transit users in Metro Vancouver will still be able to pay cash for transit trips once the Compass Card is launched. Bus commuters, for instance, will be issued a "proof of payment" ticket that allows for transfers between buses, but they won't be able to use them to transfer to SeaBuses or SkyTrains.

Anyone who wants to take part in the Compass Beta Test must apply by August 6. The test will run for three to four weeks in the fall.
